In the spring of 1968 our new band director; Mike Smith was introduced to the “french” horn as the instrument he would get an opportunity to play when school started in the fall of 1968. The band director interviewing Mr. Smith could not have seen so far into the future and realize this beginning band student would be offering the same opportunity to other children so many years later. Mr. Smith has continued to practice and perform on the horn (french is not used by those who play the instrument) ever since his start. In addition to his teaching duties, Mr. Smith is principal horn of the Clear Lake Symphony and has been featured as a soloist with the Houston Civic Symphony, The Galveston Symphony and as recent as 2006, he was featured as soloist once again with the Clear Lake Symphony.
Just after being hired to teach band at Westbury Christian, Mr. Smith attended the Four States Praise camp in Canefield, Arkansas where he was able to collect an assortment of new songs to use in worship with the Church of Christ in Deer Park where he is the deacon charged with coordinating the singing for the church. Understanding the importance of printed music in the great songs of our heritage, Mr. Smith regularly transfers song music and lyrics to PowerPoint presentations to use in weekly services.
In addition to his music skills, Mr. Smith has a passion for technology and has worked hard over the summer to publish the WCS Bands Website which he will use to communicate with students and parents. |
