WCS Wins 7 Gold Medals in TAPPS District Art Competition
(March 2008) Westbury Christian School submitted 75 art pieces to the TAPPS District Art Competition, and 44 pieces were awarded ribbons with the distinction of seven gold medals, four silver medals and seven bronze medals. According to WCS art teacher Karen Keese, “I was absolutely thrilled. The students worked really hard – I was proud of everybody.”
Individual first place winners were awarded blue ribbons and a gold medal while individual second and third place winners were awarded red and white ribbons and silver and bronze medals respectively. WCS senior Joseph Apenteng accounted for three of the gold medals. His senior portfolio, mixed media 2D and computer generated design pieces were awarded blue ribbons. His senior portfolio utilized fade out/pastel, mechanical pencil and color pencil techniques. According to Apenteng, “I was surprised by the scores I got, but I’m excited that we will continue on to state.”
WCS senior Patti Lee brought home two gold medals for her graphic design and painting transparent pieces while senior Ying Zeng received a gold medal for here applied design piece and senior Eva Lam received a gold medal for her printmaking piece. Patti Lee’s piece featured a graphic design, titled “Patti’s Tea Room,” and was composed with watercolor, doilies and ink.
Mrs. Keese said that the pieces that were awarded first through fourth place ribbons qualify for the TAPPS State Competition on April 4th and 5th at Concordia Lutheran in Austin, Texas.
