NBA Star Charlie Ward Finds Christian Mission at WCS

(September 2007)The world knows about Charlie Ward’s athletic accomplishments – Heisman Trophy winner and NBA star player. But, perhaps what the world doesn’t know as well is his passion for Christ – his desire to do God’s work. A Google search for keywords “Charlie Ward” will result in thousands of references, but when you meet Charlie Ward in person, all that fame and accomplishments fade away as you meet a truly humble person.

Charlie Ward came to Westbury Christian School this year to work in a variety of roles. Ward said, “I wanted to grow as a coach. I wanted to help develop WCS spiritually, academically and physically.” While his coaching with the basketball and football teams is a natural fit, Ward is also working with the admissions and development offices. Greg Glenn, WCS Executive Administrator, said, “What Charlie stands for in terms of excellence both on and off the field presents a tremendous role model for both the kids that we have here on campus and the kids that we want to come to WCS. His experience, connections and passion for Christian education will help in the development of the school.”

While Ward is on contract at WCS, the financial reward is probably nothing compared to his recent coaching position with the Houston Rockets. Ward said, “Jesus did not receive any payment for what he did. If I don’t have a heart to pass on to others what I have, then I’ll be stripped of what I have.” Ward admits that he brings credibility and respectability to the students; he said coaching is a process – “You have to be consistent, you have to work hard, and you have to be a good role model.”

Greg Glenn said, “We feel blessed to have Charlie Ward working with us.”

Charlie Ward is married to Tonja, his wife of 12 years, and they have two children. The family resides in Houston.
