Coach Carr Proving Ground for WCS Wildcats
(November 2007) After five winning years as the head coach of the girls’ basketball program at Westbury Christian School, Coach Russell Carr is building on that foundation as the new head coach of the boys’ basketball program. Coach Carr said, “The coaching principles are pretty much the same, but the boys are bigger and stronger, and I have to make some adjustments.” Well, Coach Carr is doing a great job adjusting!
In non-conference games, the Wildcats are currently 7-4. The Wildcats beat John Paul II from Corpus Christi, St. Thomas and, in the finals, Houston’s Second Baptist (47-45) for the championship in the recent St. Thomas High School Tournament. WCS sophomore Adam Boyd who averaged about eight points per game was awarded the MVP. WCS junior Kevin Perry made All-Tournament team. Coach Carr said that Boyd stepped up and played really well particularly as a key Wildcat player Anthony Collins had been hurt.
In the Lone Star Invitational tournament in San Antonio, Texas, the Wildcats came away 2-2. Coach Carr said it was a top-notch tournament with 32 teams participating. The Wildcats beat San Antonio Clemens 65-56 and Lake Highlands in Dallas 59-57. They lost to Dallas Skyline. Coach Carr said it was a humbling tournament. He said, “We played against teams that were above us, but it gave us an insight into our weaknesses and our strengths so we can develop on those.”
Coach Carr said he has a great assistant coaching staff including NBA star Charlie Ward. Carr said Ward brings a lot of knowledge and experience and helps to develop the individual skills of the players.
