WCS 9th Grader Wins
DNA Essay Contest

(April 2008) Westbury Christian School ninth grader Saro Ntagha was awarded first place in the high school division of the DNA essay contest award ceremony held at Baylor College of Medicine in conjunction with the 2008 National DNA Day Celebration.  His essay was entitled "DNA – The Key to Unlocking the Door to Predicting Diseases.”  Saro said, “I was shocked because I didn’t think I had a chance against the seniors.

Saro represented Breakthrough Houston which is “an academic program that builds a bridge from middle school to college for promising middle and high school students, many of whom are the first in their families to earn college degrees.”   There were several participating schools including  BMI Charter School, Forest Brook and Breakthrough Houston.  Saro’s essay was selected from over 200 submissions.  He said, “My parents both work in the medical field, and so I have a great interest in that area.  I did a lot of research and put a lot of time into writing the essay.”

Saro’s essay states, “DNA holds the key to unlock the mystery to many illnesses and diseases…researchers must be culturally sensitive in how to communicate the benefits of DNA testing in the prediction of diseases to the different ethnic groups.”

Saro won $150, and Breakthrough Houston received $300 in kind.
