Houston Endowment Grant Provides for Improved Instructional Technology

(January 2008) Westbury Christian School was the recipient of two mini grants from the Houston Endowment Foundation and the University of St. Thomas.  One grant provided for the purchase of two document cameras, one projector and a mobile cart.  The other grant provided for the purchase of several science kits.  According to Mrs. Gracie Greer, WCS Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction, “The implementation of the technology equipment will improve instruction because it will facilitate student understanding through visual reinforcement and hands-on application.”

Instructional technology in the high school anatomy and physiology class has had observable impact on student learning.  WCS science teachers Mrs. Donna Strom and Mr. Ugo Ihekweazu dissected a cow’s eye using the document camera to project a large image on the screen.  According to Mr. Ihekweazu, “The large image allows the instructor to reach multiple students simultaneously with a profound visual impact.”  Mrs. Strom said the camera will also be used for dissections of the mammalian brain, heart and kidney.

In Mrs. Catherine Tinkler’s middle school science class, the science kits have been very useful.  According to Mrs. Tinkler, “By having the science kits in the classroom I have been able to offer students more hands-on opportunities to learn the science concepts we are studying.  Students use the materials to conduct experiments with their classmates.  For example, in one case, my students performed an experiment with chemical reactions.  They were able to see the balloon inflate when the baking soda and vinegar mixture reacted to produce carbon dioxide gas.   This experience was more meaningful than just reading about it in the text book.  As a teacher I also benefit by having the materials already in the classroom.  I have been able to increase the number of experiments that we do because of this easy access to the supplies.”
