WCS Sophomores Attend HOBY Leadership Seminar
(June 2008) Westbury Christian School sophomores Jon Scott and Leticia Cuellar recently attended the Gulf Coast Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar. HOBY Leadership Seminars bring together a select group of sophomores from public and private high schools to interact with groups of distinguished leaders in business, government, education and the professions to discuss present and future issues.
WCS sophomore Jon Scott said, “I feel very blessed to have been given the opportunity to represent WCS at the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar. I learned the characteristics of a great leader through the use of communication, the willingness to succeed and by having a high sense of ownership. It was great to spend time with 200 high school student leaders of tomorrow. At HOBY, they wanted us to achieve our highest potential by giving us a challenge to attain 100 community service hours over the next year. I might have gotten only 10 hours of sleep the entire weekend, but that didn't matter because it was such a wonderful experience.”
Since HOBY’s founding, the goal of each seminar is to provide a catalyst to lifelong leadership development that empowers individuals to achieve their highest potential. As the Ambassadors are exposed to new ideas and engage in challenging topics, HOBY hopes to illustrate how to constructively think and discuss complex issues with individuals from various backgrounds and beliefs. The goal is to show the Ambassadors how to think rather that what to think. Since 1958 HOBY has been a part of more than 365,000 student lives, many of whom continue to volunteer on HOBY seminar planning committees, in their local communities and schools to keep HOBY spirit alive.
WCS sophomore Leticia Cuellar said, “I learned that one person can change the world, and that they can make a difference. HOBY was an amazing experience!”
