WCS Students in HOBY Leadership Program
(August 2007) Two Westbury Christian School student “ambassadors” attended the nationally recognized Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar held in Houston over the summer. According to Mike White, WCS guidance counselor, 11th graders Glory Nwaugbala and Amber Lake were nominated by the school based on the demonstrated leadership skills and their strong academic performance. The HOBY seminars are held simultaneously in several cities across the United States and “provides lifelong leadership development opportunities that empower individuals to achieve their highest potential.”
Glory Nwaugbala talked animatedly about her HOBY experience. She recalled mock trials, educational panels and several group activities. The mock trial was designed to help students understand the judicial system; in the educational panel, they discussed the advantages and disadvantages of standardized tests such as the TAKS, ACT and SAT.
Bill White, the Mayor of Houston, welcomed participants to the HOBY leadership seminar held on the Rice University campus in Houston, Texas. The HOBY seminar emphasized core values of volunteerism, excellence, organizational integrity, diversity, innovative thinking, community partnership and lifelong learning leadership opportunities.
Amber Lake, WCS ambassador, said, “I learned that a good leader is not just someone who leads others, but a good leader is someone who communicates, listens more than speaks, and cares about the well being and improvement of the group as a whole.”
