Main Street Theatre Performs at WCS
(April 2008) The Main Street Theatre performed “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” on the WCS campus for the K3 to 4th grade students. The play is based on the modern classic by Laura Numeroff and is a whimsical look at cause and effect. The Houston-based touring company consisted of Brandon Boswell, who played the little boy, Allison Luff, the mouse, and Richard Solis, the stage manager. Mrs. Diane King, WCS Librarian and coordinator of the event, said, “It was delightful! The little ones really enjoyed the antics of the mouse!”
In a grey mouse costume with large ears, Luff engaged the lower school students as she jumped, spun and ran around the living room/kitchen backdrop on the stage. Her dialogue and interaction with Boswell kept the kids reeling with laughter. The students were so engaged that one student tried to get up on stage to help the mouse search for some objects. Boswell and Luff said that the WCS lower school students were very attentive and well-behaved.
Mrs. King said that each year the lower school kids go on field trips, but this year the teachers decided to bring something to them. Mrs. King said the play was a wonderful way to bring a wider range of age groups together to enjoy a shared experience. While the three and four year olds enjoyed their first live performance, the 4th graders enjoyed the “play on words” incorporated into the dialogue.
A few 4th graders shared what they learned. Olivia Swasey said, “I learned that if you have one thing, don’t get something else.” Vageli Stathatos said, “The lesson I learned is don’t make a mess when your mom is not at home.” And, Ealee Tuan said, “The lesson I learned is not to spend time cleaning up instead of spending time with someone else.”
