WCS Students in Summer Medical Internships
(August 2007) Three Westbury Christian School students participated in various medical internships this summer. WCS senior Janice Hughes interned at MD Anderson in Houston , and WCS seniors Marian Fagbemi and Garner Haynie received internships through the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. The National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF/MED) introduces outstanding high school students to the world of medicine. This 10-day program introduces students to professionals from some of the nation’s top medical centers and faculty from renowned institutions of learning.
According to Janice Hughes, she applied for her internship at MD Anderson and was facilitated by her mother who works at MD Anderson. Hughes said, “I worked in the molecular pathology resource department. I was able to view and participate in learning the many experiments to test ways to treat prostate cancer from metastasizing. I was able to perform many basic tasks like DNA fragment purification and bacterial culture growth.”
During her internship, WCS senior Marian Fagbemi visited medical schools in Galveston and Houston. According to Fagbemi, “We saw a lot of cadavers at various medical schools. I witnessed the delivery of a baby, and I had the opportunity to feed and play with the babies in the nursery.”
WCS senior Garner Haynie interned at the University of Villanova in Philadelphia. According to Haynie, “We examined administrative issues facing the medical profession, and we discussed the need to become a doctor.”
According to Gracie Greer, WCS Upper School Assistant Principal, the internships were made possible through anonymous sponsorships.
