Laney Metts Wins Gold atTAPPS State Swim Finals
(February 2008) Westbury Christian School sophomore Laney Metts won both the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events in the TAPPS Division II finals held at Blossom Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas. WCS faculty Mrs. Karen Keese who assists with the swim team said, “I was real excited for Laney. The 200 yard heat was the most exciting event. Laney was head to head with Haley Hatfield from Parish Episcopal.” Metts final time was 2:06:46 which was a personal best for her and just 39 hundredths of a second ahead of Hatfield. In the 500 yard heat, Metts lapped her closest competitor. Metts time was 5:40:50.
Metts has been swimming since she was five years old. She practices at the Houston Swim Club an average of four hours per day – a couple of hours in the early morning and a couple of hours in the evening. Metts said Hatfield had beat her in the 200 prelims, but “It all comes down to whether you have mentally and visually prepared yourself. I knew I could stay with her, and I could do good.”
In a special WCS chapel, Metts was honored along with her co-swimmers sophomore Andrew Bauknight and senior Lauren Holmes. Holmes competed in the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard backstroke while Bauknight competed in the 100 yard butterfly.
Metts said, “My hard work has paid off. I’ll keep practicing – I’d like to get faster and improve my personal time.”
WCS senior Lauren Holmes and sophomores Laney Metts and Andrew Bauknight were honored at a special high school chapel.
