National Junior Honor Society Inductees

National Junior Honor Society Inductees 18 at WCS

(September 2007) Westbury Christian School (WCS) recently inducted eighteen new members into the Jerry Cox Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). They are middle school students Autumn Arnold, Tosin Ajiboye, Bailey Carrow, Chad Chavez, Zach Corbut, Chrystal Davis, Aaron Durley, Alexis Fuller, Kaillyn Lewis, Merrin Mathew, Taraka Moses, Angelica Radoulov, Jonathan Smith, Matthew S. Smith, John Starrett, Claire Stevenson, Ealing Tuan and William Washington.

Mrs. Gracie Greer, WCS assistant principal, welcomed students and their families and introduced the guest speaker and NJHS sponsor, Mrs. Beverly Arnold, at the traditional ceremony held at the Westbury Church of Christ. Mrs. Arnold shared the story, “The Star Thrower,” with the inductees.  Arnold emphasized the meaning of the story, “We have all been gifted with the ability to make a difference.  And, if we can become aware of that gift, we gain through the strength of our vision the power to shape the future.”

During the ceremony, NJHS officers made brief presentations on the cornerstones of the NJHS.  Michael Chung led with the lighting of the flame of knowledge.  Nicole Caputo talked about the cornerstone of character, “Character is the force within each individual which distinguishes that person from others.”  On the cornerstone of scholarship, Andrew Smith said, “Scholarship means a commitment to learning.”    Rasheed Sulaimon said, “Leadership should exert a wholesome influence on the school.”  Christina Curtis talked about service, “Willingness to work for the benefit of those in need, without monetary compensation or without recognition, is the quality we seek in our membership.”

Each inductee was awarded a certificate of membership by Dr. David Lacey, WCS Upper School principal, and a pin which was affixed by their parents. Inductees were then invited to stand and light their candle from the white candle of knowledge. They then recited the NJHS pledge, “I pledge myself to uphold the high purposes of the National Junior Honor Society to which I have been selected; I will be loyal to my school and my God, and I will maintain and encourage high standards of scholarship, leadership, service and character.”

The National Junior Honor Society recognizes students who have attained academic excellence and who have demonstrated the hallmarks of character, scholarship, leadership and service and encourages its members and other students to aspire to excel in these virtues.
