WCS Students Earn Awards at Houston Rodeo Art Show
(January 2008) Several Westbury Christian School students received awards and recognition for their artwork submitted to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Program. Ten WCS students received red ribbons, and there were three “Rainbow Finalists,” one “Blue Ribbon,” one “Best of Show” and a “Gold Medal” winner. According to WCS art teacher Karen Keese, “This is the best we’ve done in the six years that we’ve entered the rodeo art show.”
According to program officials, “Every participant in the School Art Program is a winner, receiving a certificate of merit, signed by the Show president, and a blue, red or white ribbon for achievement. Special recognition is bestowed upon selected works and the artists who created them. The “Best of Show,” “Gold Medal” and “Special Merit” winners have their work prominently displayed in the Show’s Hayloft Gallery throughout the run of the Show.”
WCS senior Joseph Apenteng’s sculpture was selected for “Best of Show.” Apenteng’s sculpture of a cowboy was formed from Plastina oil-based clay and mounted on a 12” armature. Details included guns on the cowboy’s waist and a toothpick in his mouth. WCS senior Samaria Mouton’s color drawing of a rodeo scene was selected for a “Gold Medal.” Mouton’s drawing depicted a cowgirl riding a horse around a barrel in a rodeo arena.
According to Mrs. Keese, two ‘Best of Shows’ and two ‘Gold Medals’ are awarded at the elementary, middle and high school levels for private and public schools. Last year over 300,000 pieces were submitted by kindergarteners through 12th graders from over 145 school districts including private and parochial schools. Mrs. Keese said, “It’s a significant honor for WCS to receive both a ‘Best of Show’ and a ‘Gold Medal.’
Submissions from WCS included 4th grader Cory Garza, 6th graders Kyle Cragle and Elizabeth Pollard, 7th grader Corbin Culpepper, 8th graders Jonathan Solomon, Chrystal Davis, Grace Shin and Andrew Smith, 9th graders Richard McDonald, Matthew Rodriguez and Tobe Mokolo, 10th graders Annie Pan and Kristi Keese, 11th grader Valerie Pham, and 12th graders Joseph Apenteng and Samaria Mouton.
