WCS Faculty at Middle School Science Academy
(September 2007) Mrs. Catherine Tinkler and Mr. Matt Semanek, faculty members at Westbury Christian School, were participants of the Middle School Science Academy, a program sponsored by the University of Houston-Victoria. The program was made possible by a Texas Education Agency grant under the direction of Dr. Nora Hutto. Mrs. Tinkler and Mr. Semanek were able to join Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) teachers this summer in several, day long classes and will continue to earn professional development hours during the school year. Topics included simple machines (levers and pulleys), basic chemistry, life science, and systems.
The program offers excellent professional development for middle school science teachers with a focus on having more student directed activities that can be taken and implemented directly into the classrooms. Teachers come away with laboratory oriented activities to share with their students and a greater understanding of the science concepts critical to their content area. Mrs. Tinkler and Mr. Semanek attended the first of several staff developments for this school year on Thursday, September 6th. Mrs. Tinkler stated that “this experience has greatly enhanced my ability to teach important scientific concepts to my students. I have already implemented several of the strategies discussed. Students at Westbury Christian can expect hands-on learning and more opportunities for laboratory activities because of what I have learned through this program.”
