Wildcats Beat District Rival Second Baptist
(January 2009) The Westbury Christian Wildcats roared Tuesday night as they beat district rival Second Baptist 57-40 in front of hundreds of screaming Wildcat and Eagle fans.
Second Baptist Eagles got an early lead and put the pressure on the Wildcats. The Eagles had some good possessions and the Wildcats were a little loose and turned the ball over a couple of times. That put the Eagles up 18-12 at the end of the first quarter.
But then as Coach Carr said, “I knew the game was going to be a lot more than just a first quarter.” The Wildcats got control of the game. They did a great job defensively and got some good possessions. At the end of the first half, the Wildcats were leading 29-25 and the fans were going crazy. This was, after all, the game to end all games.
In the third quarter, “We blew them out.” Carr said the Eagles were getting a little tired – they are a younger team. “We maintained our intensity and at the end of the third quarter we were up 47-31.” In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats used the clock to their advantage. They had a few long possessions. The Wildcats were led by Anthony Collins with 13 points, Cody Glenn with 10, and Adam Boyd with 10.
Before the New Year, the Wildcats played in Rolla, Missouri at the US Bank Holiday Classic. They opened the tournament with a win against Rolla High School placing them in the semifinals to play last year’s tournament champion and the number 5 team in the state of Arkansas - Rogers High School. The Wildcats pulled out a 35-30 victory with the opportunity to play in the championship game against Waynesville High School, a local Missouri team. The Wildcats finished the tournament winning 59-51 and taking home the championship. Kevin Perry was named tournament MVP and Adam Boyd and Anthony Collins were named to the All-Tournament team. This tournament primed the Wildcats to enter district play with the top two teams in the district - Fort Bend Baptist and Second Baptist. The Wildcats beat Fort Bend 75-37 and Second Baptist 57-40.
The win against Second Baptist brings the Wildcat district record to 3-0 and the overall record at 19-4. Coach Carr said, “It’s still a little early in district games, but we have played two very tough teams, and we are going to continue to build.”
