WCS Faculty Runs in Chevron Houston Marathon

(January 2009) On Sunday, January 18th, a very unlikely participant will be running in the 26.2 mile Chevron Houston Marathon.  Carrie Chilcoat - dancer, singer, cheerleading coach and upper school math teacher at Westbury Christian School - will face the challenge of a marathon for the first time.  Chilcoat admitted, “I’m a little nervous.  The longest race I’ve ever run was one mile!”

But Chilcoat is not going out there cold turkey.  She has been training with a group of marathon runners since July.  Chilcoat said every Saturday they get up at 5am and complete distance runs and timed runs.  On her practice runs, she has completed up to 18.6 miles.  Chilcoat said she has been motivated by her roommate who has run in the Austin marathon.  Chilcoat shared the spiritual dimension of her motivation as coming from Hebrews 12:1 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

The Chevron Houston Marathon gets started at 7am in front of the Minute Maid Park just north of the George R. Brown Convention Center.  The 26.2 mile course goes through Rice and West University, passing the Galleria, Tanglewood and Memorial Park areas, returning to finish at the George R. Brown Convention Center.  Runners will have six hours to complete the marathon.  Chilcoat divulged her strategy to run five minutes then walk one minute in cycles to the finish line.  She said it would take her about five hours to complete the marathon.

This year, runners will be outfitted with a digital chip which will allow spectators and friends to receive updated information on runners’ progress.  If you would like to track a participant, go to https://register.bazumedia.com/HOUST2009/register to sign up for “Athlete Alert Registration.”  Tracking information will be sent to your mobile phone as runners complete various phases of the marathon.

Chilcoat said, “My goal is to finish.  If I can do it, anyone can!”
