CollegeEd® Program Prepares WCS Students
(January 2009) Westbury Christian School recently completed a ten week CollegeEd® Program for 7th through 12th grades. According to the College Board, “CollegeEd® is a collaborative academic and career planning curriculum for students, teachers, and parents, designed to empower students with the skills and knowledge to envision their goals and achieve success in higher education.” WCS Guidance Counselor Mike White said, “Without a doubt WCS students are better prepared for college because of this program.”
Students met for 50 minutes every Monday over a ten week period. Trained WCS teachers used a CollegeEd® teacher’s manual and students were given a grade specific workbook. According to the College Board, “CollegeEd® student workbooks are designed for easy, flexible implementation. The seventh-grade edition is separated into six units and each of the other grades' editions is broken into ten units. Within the workbooks, students are encouraged to explore their own personal learning styles. They learn how to determine goals and how to effectively prepare themselves (academically, socially and financially) in order to achieve those goals. In order to assist students, each unit includes exercises relevant to the comprehension of these concepts.”
White said, “The program helps students to think about college earlier. Students will have had every opportunity to make a well-informed decision in regards to college and the decisions leading up to selecting the particular college they attend. The program is meant to not only help students, but families as well. A family guide goes home with each student to help parents know what they need to do to help their child. Educating families about college is a priority as the college selection process involves both students and parents.”
This was the second year WCS utilized the CollegeEd® Program. White said WCS plans to continue to implement the CollegeEd® Program at WCS for the benefit of its students.
