The Wildcats Are 3-0 and Counting
(October 2008) The Westbury Christian School Wildcat football team and fans missed the homecoming game against Brazosport Christian and another against Baytown Christian in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike; however, the Wildcat spirit was once again dominant on the field at Lutheran South on Saturday, September 27th as most of the city regained power and school activities resumed.
Saturday’s win puts the Wildcats at 3-0! WCS Head Coach Charlie Ward (and, yes, he is the Heisman Trophy winner and NBA player as one parent asked at the game) said, “Our guys have stepped up and taken leadership and ownership of their team. Our coaches are the facilitators that give structure for our guys to get it done.”
WCS Defensive Coordinator Randy Hodges recalled the first win against KIPP Academy, “We had nine guys on every tackle – they were incredible!” The Wildcats won 48-6 in that game. While KIPP Academy was a formidable team, Coach Hodges said, “Bay Area Christian was a big and strong team and very well coached. But we would not give up – our guys fought and fought and fought.” WCS senior Christian Broussard scored a touchdown on a 10 yard pass from Nick Leonard in the first quarter. And again in the second quarter, Christian Broussard scored a touchdown on a 13 yard pass from Nick Leonard. Bay Area countered with a touchdown in the second quarter. The Wildcats regrouped defensively and maintained their lead to win 14-7.
The game against Lutheran South started with a bang! At 05:39 on the clock in the first quarter, WCS senior Christian Broussard returned a punt for 75 yards to score the first touchdown. WCS senior Kevin Perry made the second touchdown in the first quarter on a one yard run. In the second quarter, Kevin Perry made two more touchdowns to put the Wildcats up 26-0. But Lutheran South came back with two touchdowns for a score of 26-13 to wrap up the second half. Coach Hodges said, “Championship games are won in the second half.” And once again the Wildcat defense held off Lutheran South to end the game at 26-13.
The Wildcats continue their football season action with a post-hurricane schedule that includes three district games away and two district home games. Homecoming festivities have been rescheduled for Friday, October 31st at 7:30pm versus Fort Bend Baptist Academy.
