WCS Celebrates Martin Luther King Day

(January 2009) Westbury Christian School commemorated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a special program organized by the AP Government and Politics class and other high school volunteers.  First grade through 12th grade students attended the program which featured the societal changes that Dr. King helped to bring about by his non-violent leadership of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s.

While Martin Luther King Day is normally a holiday at WCS, this year school was in session to make up days lost due to Hurricane Ike.  Mr. Greg Glenn, WCS Executive Administrator, wanted to celebrate the day while students were at school.

WCS senior Glory Nwaugbala led the class in preparing their 50 minute program.  The program depicted the timeline from slavery to segregation to modern day diversity and freedom through the efforts of Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior Ariel Robinson opened the program with a slide show and narration on the tragedies of slavery.  Then another senior, Daelyn Richardson, talked about segregation and the Jim Crow laws while students performed a skit demonstrating how blacks had to give up their seats to whites on buses.  Senior Richard Glenn talked about the life and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.   Senior Jared Jernigan followed with a rousing delivery of the entire “I Have a Dream” speech to a standing ovation.  Program organizer Glory Nwaugbala concluded with a speech stating, “Thanks to the efforts and sacrifices of many people who believed in a more unified and peaceful world, our social culture has changed to include tolerance and open-mindedness.”

Novella Washington, a parent of a senior at WCS, commented on the program, saying “It was emotional and commemorative of Dr. King.   I wasn't sure what to expect but am very proud of the students and WCS for remembering and acknowledging this day.”
