WCS Wins Non-Auction Champion Trophy at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Competition
(April 2009) Westbury Christian School won a very significant award at the Annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Competition – WCS senior Emily Pan’s color drawing entitled “Shielding” was awarded the non-auction champion in the high school category.
Mrs. Karen Keese, WCS Art teacher, said “This is an incredible and outstanding achievement.” There are over 300,000 pieces entered each year at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Competition. The “Best of Show” and “Gold Medal” awards are entered into two final categories, “auction” and “non-auction.” Only 54 pieces are selected for the auction category, and a grand champion and reserve champion are awarded. This year the grand champion piece was auctioned to the winning bid of $155,000 and the reserve champion piece was auctioned for $145,000. The student artists receive a percentage of the sale.

In the non-auction category a champion is selected. This year, WCS senior Emily Pan won that award. While Pan did not receive a monetary award, she was honored at a WCS high school chapel where Mrs. Keese presented her with an impressive trophy. “I was surprised and excited when Mrs. Keese told me I had won the champion award. I really appreciate Mrs. Keese’s help and encouragement,” expressed Emily.
Pan plans to enroll at the University of Texas in Austin where she will major in accounting and minor in art or design.
