Carr and Sutton Take Wildcats to Final Four
(February 2009) On Friday, February 27th, Westbury Christian School’s boys and girls basketball teams will face San Antonio Christian and Bishop Gorman, respectively, at the TAPPS State Championship Basketball games in Mansfield, Texas.
Coach Russell Carr, head coach of the WCS Wildcat boys’ team, said, “We’ll be doing very little different than what we have been doing from day one. We may make some adjustments as we play, but we won’t re-pour the foundation that we’ve laid.”
Coach Reed Sutton, head coach of the WCS Wildcat girls’ team said, “We have a great team. This is the time of year where coaches step back and let their players take leadership.”
The 2009 basketball season marks the 20th year that the boys’ varsity team will play in the TAPPS State Tournament. While this legacy has set a high standard, Coach Carr said, “There are high expectations, but it is not added pressure. Our kids already have expectations for what they should do and can do and they want to meet those expectations.” Coach Carr added, “We expect to be in control on Friday. If we are in control, then we may have the opportunity to determine the outcome.”
The girl’s varsity basketball program has also set a high standard at WCS. Coach Sutton said that he has been at WCS for eight years and each of those years the girls’ basketball team has made it to the final four. Coach Sutton said, “We have talented players with a great work ethic and an unselfish team attitude. They’re great kids, and they have fun playing basketball.”
