WCS Golf Coach Earns TPI Level I Certification
(February 2009) Westbury Christian School’s golf coach David Cragle recently earned the Level I Golf Fitness Instructor Certification from the Titlist Performance Institute, based in Oceanside, California. The Titlist Performance Institute Golf Fitness Instructor Program is a “three level education course designed to teach golf coaches how to identify and overcome any physical restrictions that are limiting a student's potential. Each workshop features the latest in golf-specific health and fitness, from golf swing biomechanics, to physical screening techniques, to exercise prescriptions, to the most recent research and development in the field of golf swing analysis.”
As a Level I Golf Fitness Instructor, Coach Cragle will bring a new level of golf fitness expertise and vision to WCS golf students. Cragle, now in his fifth year as head golf coach at WCS, had previously integrated a fitness and conditioning day each week into the golf program, but says that “gaining TPI training and certification gives us new insights into and training protocols for specific fitness, strength, flexibility, growth dynamics, peak height velocity, and a variety of other athletic development issues faced by junior golfers through their various growth phases to adult maturity.” Cragle added, “In golf fitness, we are beginning to recognize the value of the Long-term Athletic Development models used by the leading Olympic athlete training programs around the world. This includes training our golf athletes based on which adolescent ‘growth phase’ we find them in.” Cragle noted that responding to these specialized developmental phases in a child’s growth is critical in properly implementing and adjusting each child’s conditioning workouts and golf training to maximize their success as athletes.
In addition to TPI Level 1 Fitness certification, Coach Cragle has also recently attended the first-ever TPI Level 2 Junior Golf Fitness Certification training and is presently working on completing the final elements of that certification. At present there are no TPI Level 2 Junior Golf certified professionals in the Greater Houston Area.
