Featured Author Andrea White Visits WCS
(November 2008) In collaboration with the Westbury Christian School library department, Andrea White, published author, attorney and wife of Houston Mayor Bill White, shared her experiences as an author with 5th through 8th grade students from Westbury Christian School, Sugar Grove Christian Academy, and St. Thomas More Catholic School. Mrs. White said, “It takes a passion for a good story, natural curiosity about the world and determination to be a published author.”
According to WCS Librarian Mrs. Diane King, Mrs. White talked about the research for her latest novel, Radiant Girl. White visited the Dead Zone, an area around the former nuclear plant in Chernobyl, Ukraine that melted down during a safety check. White described the eerie silence of the Black Forest and isolation of the area today which has become a game reserve since people cannot legally live there. People in the surrounding area are still dying of radiation poisoning although the disaster was 22 years ago.
Mrs. King said students were full of questions. Mrs. White patiently answered those she could while explaining that there was little research and what research has been done was not widely available due to the closed Ukraine society. People still don’t know how many people died although estimates range from 100’s to 100,000’s.
Mrs. White said, “Along with a good story, it takes a lot of determination to publish a book. For the three books that I’ve published, I’ve also received a stack of rejection letters that are taller than I am.” Mrs. White has also authored Surviving Antarctica: Reality TV 2083 which was nominated for a Bluebonnet Award and Window Boy, a book about a young man passionate about basketball and Winston Churchill.
Each year, Westbury Christian School, Sugar Grove Christian Academy and St. Thomas More Catholic School librarians collaborate on projects to bring educational memories for their students.
