Westbury Christian School Band under the direction or Mr. Tyler Wiggains and Ms. Desiree McGowan performed at the recent A Musical Salute to Texas Independence which was sponsored by Southwest Houston 2000 and hosted at the Welch Middle School. Other schools performing included the Welch Middle School Jazz Ensemble and the Westbury High School Symphonic Band. The highlight of the event featured the Houston Concert Band and a combination of all bands with the Houston Concert Band.
According to Mr. Tyler Wiggains, the WCS Band Director, “The WCS band performed difficult pieces – at a higher level than we were accustomed to – yet we performed very well.” The pieces included Belleau Wood, a concert march by John Edmondson; Declaration in Blue by Robert W. Smith which was an engaging and stupendous performance; Kenya Contrasts by William Himes; and, Blue Ridge Saga by James Swearingen. The WCS Band also performed Deep in the Heart of Texas by Swander and Hershey and Texas, Our Texas by William J. Marsh with the combined bands including Houston Concert Band, Westbury High School Symphonic Band and the Welch Middle Jazz Band.
For the occasion, the WCS band members were resplendent in tuxedos and formal black dresses. According to Mr. Wiggains, “I couldn’t be more proud of the kids – they were amazing to watch!”
