WCS Wildcat Alumni in NCAA Sweet Sixteen
(March 2006 ) Last year, the entire Westbury Christian School community was thrilled to know that Emily Niemann, a WCS alumnus had helped to lead Baylor University to the Women’s NCAA Division I basketball championship. This year, WCS has more to be excited about!According to WCS Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach Greg Glenn, WCS alumni Jarmon Durriseau-Collins (Class of ’01), Stanley Asumnu (Class of ’01), and Wendell Preadom (Class of ’05) are representing Westbury Christian School very well as national attention has been drawn to their respective college basketball teams that have won at least the first round of games in the NCAA basketball tournament.
In a telephone interview, Jarmon Durriseau-Collins said, “I feel like Coach [Glenn] prepared me for college – he gave me a solid foundation to meet the competitiveness and atmosphere of a game in front of 30,000 fans.” According to WCS Coach Glenn, Durriseau-Collins was the first signed recruit by Head Coach John Beilein when Beilein took on his job at West Virginia University four years ago. Durriseau-Collins is now a senior majoring in Communications at the University of West Virginia. Coach Glenn said, “Jarmon was a tremendous leader on the WCS basketball team, and he has carried those traits with him to WVU.” WVU has advanced to the “Sweet 16” in the NCAA and takes on the University of Texas in Atlanta, Georgia on Thursday, March 23rd.
Stanley Asumnu, a teammate and classmate of Dussiseau-Collins, is in his senior year playing for the University of Tennessee. Coach Glenn said that Asumnu was one of the most athletic and hard-working students in the WCS basketball program. Interestingly, Stanley Asumnu played against another WCS alumnus, Wendell Preadom, in a recent NCAA game. Coach Glenn said that several WCS coaches watched the game between Asumnu’s University of Tennessee and Preadom’s Wichita University. Coach Glenn said it was amazing to see two WCS alumni guarding each other in the NCAA Tournament. It was a win-win situation for Westbury Christian School – either way an alumnus would advance to the NCAA “Sweet 16” tournament. As it turned out, Wendell Preadom is the alumnus we’ll be watching.
