Thirty-eight young men and women proudly received their high school diplomas
from Westbury Christian School on Friday, May 28th in the presence of hundreds
of their families and friends at the WCS Gymnasium in Houston, Texas.
In her salutatory address, Lora Yoo, a native of Korea, recalled her fond memories
of Westbury Christian School since the seventh grade. Yoo stated “WCS had
instilled in her self-confidence, self-worth and a relationship with God.” Her
advice to her peers was to “follow effective action with quiet reflection.”
The valedictorian was Jung Kim, also a native of Korea. According to Mrs. McKenzie,
long-time WCS elementary teacher, “Jung Kim has overcome overwhelming odds.
He started in the third grade with little English and has become a fantastic
and amazing young man.” In his valedictory address, Jung Kim challenged
the WCS graduates to “go not where their paths may lead, but to go instead
where there is no path and leave a trail.”
In an inspirational presentation, Rick Fyffe, minister at West University Church
of Christ in Houston, Texas, questioned the graduates, “Can you finish
what you started?” He offered three ways to finish strong. First, you have
to stand up for what you believe. Second, you have to grow up – that is,
learn to overcome life’s difficulties. And, third – never give up.
In a touching presentation from the senior class, each graduate stood up and
offered a bouquet of roses to their parents as a way of saying thank you for
the education that they had received.
According to Robert McCloy, executive administrator, “WCS has prepared
each student to be successful wherever they go. The Christian education at WCS
has provided a foundation for each graduate to be good parents, good employees,
and good citizens in whatever community they settle.”
Westbury Christian School is a private, non-profit, culturally diverse school
offering unique educational opportunities for K3 through 12th grade students.
The school is located at 10420 Hillcroft at Willowbend.
