WCS Science Teacher Selected to NASA Aerospace Scholars Program (March, 2006 ) Westbury Christian School high school physics and chemistry teacher, Mr. Nathan Lang, was recently selected to be a counselor/teacher for the NASA High School Aerospace Scholars Program (HAS) at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas this summer.
According to Mr. Lang, “When I first heard about the program, I began researching it and making myself familiar with everything that goes on there. I have learned that this program really changes the lives of students and that it causes them to look at the world differently. They gain the ability to solve problems and think critically about new obstacles they are faced with every day.”
The HAS program lasts for six one-week sessions. Four teachers are chosen for each week totaling 24 teachers who are all selected from high schools in the state of Texas. Each week the students are divided into four teams. According to Mr. Lang, his team will be focused on working on the planet Mars. Their research will include discovering a new world, the search for life, laboratories and tools, space suit requirements, rovers and robots, communications and team organization. In addition to his one-week internship, Mr. Lang will coordinate with his team for several weeks leading up the internship utilizing an interactive web-based application.
Mrs. Gracie Greer, WCS Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction, said, “Anytime one of our teachers participates in an educational program, they gain knowledge that is transferred to the classroom.” Mr. Lang said, “I intend to communicate the new ideas and activities to my WCS students. I intend to actively encourage my classroom students to be a part of HAS. I will share NASA’s visions of the future and the technological feats of the past.”
Mr. Lang is a 2004 graduate of a Harding University and is the son of Steve and Sheila Lang of Judsonia, Arkansas.
