23 Students Inducted into National Honor Society
(March 2006 )
Westbury Christian School recently inducted 23 new members into the Rowland Laxson Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). They are Ope Amosu, Joseph Apenteng, Suphanut Chansangavej, Hoang Dao, Jay Gilbert, Emily Harper, Patrick Jefferson, Campbell Jernigan, Ryan Keenan, Katie Keese, Matthew Keus, Russell Leonard, Alyssa Leyva, Joshua Miller, Ariana Ochoa, Krystal Onwumere, Thinh Quach, Kristin Robinson, Delisa Somoye, Gina Teague, Rachelle Wang, Jazmine Washington and Ijeoma Waturuocha.
Mr. Mike White, NHS sponsor, began the traditional ceremony by lighting the white candle set on a table with four other colored candles – the white candle represented knowledge. As Mr. White welcomed parents, relatives and students, the existing members filed in followed by the 23 inductees. Then, NHS member Brandon Greene took the green candle representing character and lit it from the white candle. Greene told the inductees, “Character is the force in each individual that distinguishes that person from others.” Next, NHS member Paola Estrada lit the yellow candle representing scholarship. She said, “Scholarship means a commitment to learning.” Estrada introduced James Ewing who lit the purple candle representing leadership. Ewing told his peers, “In taking the initiative in class and school activities, the real leader strives to train others to attain the same objective.”
Lindsey Calder then lit the red candle representing service and said, “Willingness to work without pay or recognition for the benefit of those in need is the quality we seek in our membership.”
Each inductee was then invited to stand and light their candle from the white candle of knowledge. After all 23 had lit their candles, they recited the NHS pledge promising to uphold the standards of character, scholarship, leadership and service. Finally, each inductee was awarded a certificate and a pin which was affixed by their parents.
The National Honor Society recognizes students who have attained a 3.5 GPA and above and who have demonstrated the hallmarks of character, scholarship, citizenship, leadership and service and encourages its members and other students to aspire to excel in these virtues.
