WCS Students Place in Regional Science Olympiad

A group of 21 Westbury Christian Upper School students traveled to Blinn College in Bryan, Texas to participate in the annual Regional Science Olympiad. The Science Olympiad is a nonprofit organization developed to improve the quality of science education, increase student interest in science, and provide recognition of outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. Twelve high schools and eight middle schools competed in events ranging from Rocketry, Robotics, and Wheeled Vehicles to Health Science, Chemistry, Forestry and Physics.
According to Mrs. Gracie Greer, WCS Upper School Assistant Principal for Curriculum Development, “We wanted to give our students an opportunity to be challenged academically and consequently gain recognition for their accomplishments.” Mrs. Melacyn Turner, WCS science teacher said that the students had to meet the designated specifications for each project which included Wheeled Vehicle, Awesome Aquifer, Reptiles and Amphibians, and Road Scholar among others.
The WCS high school students included Lindsay Calder, Boss Chansangavej, Hoang Dao, Courtney Epps, Nancy Fitzpatrick, Jay Gilbert, Matthew Keus, Khai Le, Glory Nwagbala, Delisa Somoye and Aaron Stinnett. The WCS middle school team included Ealing Tuan, Christina Curtis, Jonathan Lim, Andrew Smith, Ronnie Lane, Derek Boykins, Andy Fitzpatrick, Young Moon, Evan Breen and Rasheed Sulaimon.
Ealing Tuan and Christina Curtis placed third in Science and Fitness. Jonathan Lim and Andrew Smith placed fourth in Awesome Aquifer. Ronnie Lane and Derek Boykins placed fourth in Wheeled Vehicle while Andy Fitzpatrick and Young Moon placed fourth in Reptiles and Amphibians and third place in Road Scholar respectively.
Mr. Nathan Lang, WCS science teacher, said the students had been preparing and testing their projects since December of last year. Lang said, “I am proud of the hard work and preparation that our students put into their projects. At the event, I could see their excitement, and I know they are looking forward to coming back next year.”
