WCS Varsity Softball Heads to State
(May, 2006 ) In an exciting, edge-of-your seat game, the Westbury Christian School varsity softball team defeated Houston Christian 9-8 which advanced WCS to the state championship in Waco, Texas. According to Head Coach Tony Vettriano, who has been coaching the WCS varsity softball team for 10 years, this is the third time in 10 years and the first time in the last five years that the softball team has gone to the state championships.
Coach Vettraino said while it is a very exciting victory, the girls have come a long way. With only four returning starters, the fledgling team had to recruit and train new players. Everyone sacrificed their time and worked hard to make a team. Coach Vettraino said, “The girls believed in themselves early on. They genuinely cared about each other on and off the field.”
Assistant Coach Preston Hill candidly said he was surprised at the team’s progress. He said the coaches spend more time on the positives – they mention where improvement needs to take place, but they also build on the positives. Coach Hill said, “[Softball] is a learning experience. There are negatives and there are positives – it’s life – that’s the way it is. And, we learn from our mistakes.”
As the team gets ready for the state championship, Coaches Vettraino and Hill are working hard with the girls. They concur, “We’ll play hard, we’ll stay focused, and no matter the outcome, we’re still champions.”
