(March, 2006) Spring break for most people is a time for fun and relaxation – a time to go visit family, friends and exciting places. For a few people, spring break is an opportunity to serve others. Several Westbury Christian School students used their spring break to go on mission trips to various countries to help people in need.
WCS senior Lindsay Calder and her family traveled to rural Zacatecaluca in San Salvador to help drill wells to provide potable water. Calder said the people of Zacatecaluca don’t have the resources to provide their own potable water. At a one day clinic Calder said many of the diagnosed illnesses were related to the consumption of contaminated water. Calder, a varsity soccer player, said they organized soccer games – girls against boys – and the girls won. She said she was the only one playing with shoes. According to Calder, “I came back and realized that I don’t need a lot of things – I discovered the necessities of life.”
WCS 10th grade student Anderson Braun and his brother, Cameron in the 8th grade, along with Kyle Miller in the 10th grade went to Gulf Port, Mississippi with their youth group for a few days to help clean up the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Anderson said one day they removed a huge tree that had fallen on a shack in an elderly lady’s yard. Andersen said that task took all day, and the lady was very appreciative. Anderson said, “At first I wanted to stay home and relax, but I’m definitely glad I went. It made me feel really good!” Avery and Riley Braun who also attend WCS were very proud of their older siblings and said they want to get involved in mission trips too. Kelly Braun, WCS Events Coordinator and mother of the students, said her heart swelled with pride knowing that her kids had chosen to help others.
A group of three brothers from the 9th and 11th grades along with their youth group went to Acuña, Mexico located just across the border from Del Rio, Texas. Marc Dennard, his twin brother Ben and his brother Justin helped out with the medical clinic at an orphanage. The brothers and their youth group cleaned up homes, painted the clinic and picked up trash off the streets. Marc said he enjoyed playing soccer with the local kids. According to Marc, “The mission trip impacted me because it was different to see how people lived in poverty. It was good to see God’s work.”
