27 Inducted into National Honor Society

(April 2007) Twenty seven upper school students were recently inducted into the National Honor Society Rowland Laxson Chapter at Westbury Christian School.  The inductees included seven seniors: Taylor Aschermann, Jennifer Connelly, Caitlin Florence, Johnson Hoang, Hoi Ying (Sandra) Ngo, Charles (Rye) Olson and Arturo Prieto.  Thirteen juniors were in the group including Isa Aburto, Sarah Adams, En-Ting (Jim) Chu, Jonathan Cozad, Marian Fagbemi, Kirstie Haynie, Lauren Holmes, Janice Hughes, Ashley Kaldis, Patti Lee, Weiyi (Emily) Li, Samaria Mouton and Kevin Phung.  Seven sophomores completed the group: Amber Lake, Kalvin Lewis, Glory Nwaugbala, Jennifer Phung, Ariel Robinson, Veronica Russell and Robert Young.

WCS Executive Administrator Robert O. McCloy was the guest speaker at the traditional ceremony attended by parents, family members, faculty and fellow students.  He applauded the students on their skills and talents and encouraged them “to not only be members of the National Honor Society, but ‘God’s Honor Society’ as well.”  Current NHS officers talked about character, scholarship, leadership and service – the hallmarks of the National Honor Society.  WCS Upper School principal and assistant principal, Dr. David M. Lacey and Mrs. Gracie Greer presented the inductees with a certificate and a pin followed by parents and parent representatives who proudly affixed the pins on the inductees.  Then, each inductee lighted a candle and stood together as a group and recited the NHS pledge.

The National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are the nation's premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school and middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NHS and NJHS serve to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character (and Citizenship for NJHS). These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS and NJHS. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
