AP Government Class Attends Luncheon with
James A. Baker III
Westbury Christian School’s AP Government class had the opportunity to listen to James A. Baker III talk about his political experience at a recent luncheon hosted by the World Affairs Council of Houston. The WCS students included seniors Trac Nguyen, Gavin Lyman, Aryan Shazad, Nancy Fitzpatrick, and junior Lexus Bradford. Several other Houston high schools and interested parties attended the luncheon.
Mr. Baker’s presentation was entitled, “An Unexpected Public Life: Its Adventures and Lessons.” According to the World Affairs Council of Houston, “James A. Baker III ranks among Houston’s most distinguished statesmen. His remarkable life of public service has benefited and inspired Americans and the world.” Westbury Christian School AP Government teacher Russell Carr said, “It was a great opportunity to hear from a great leader with so much foreign policy experience.” Nancy Fitzpatrick, WCS senior, was very impressed – she said, “Being there made politics seem so real. I never realized how much politics could be a part of a young person’s life. The decisions politicians make affect my future. Young people need to be made more aware and knowledgeably of our politics and government.” Another WCS senior, Trac Nguyen, was also encouraged – he said, “Mr. Baker made a good impression on me. I feel motivated to pursue a political career.” Nguyen is of Vietnamese origin, and he believes that he can take the politics and government that he learns here and make a positive impact in Vietnam.
According to the World Affairs Council of Houston, “We are one of Houston’s most prestigious citizen forums. Through diversified programming, the Council presents all sides of current global issues, promotes better understanding of international relations and contributes to national and international policy debates. The result is a better educated citizenry and the advancement of Houston as an important international center.”
