WCS Faculty and Administrators Attend Fund Raising Workshop
(June 2007) Faculty and administrators from Westbury Christian School had the opportunity to attend a two day workshop sponsored by the University of St. Thomas and the Houston Endowment Foundation. The purpose of the workshop was to connect teachers and administrators with resources to enrich instruction available within our own communities and to provide opportunities to obtain funding through grants. Presenters came from the Houston Museum of Heath and Medicine, The Children’s Museum, NASA, the Holocaust Museum, The Institute of International Education, Neuhaus Education Center, along with instructional specialists from several area public school districts. Schools in attendance will have the opportunity to apply for funding for special needs by applying for a grant through the University of St. Thomas and the Houston Endowment foundation.
WCS teachers and administrators came away from the workshop excited and eager to apply for grants aimed at improving science instruction and student engagement in the sciences at all grade levels. According to Mrs. Joy Lacey, WCS 4th grade teacher, “It made me more aware of the different places in Houston that have wonderful resources (many being free) to help me as a teacher. These resources can help the students see that learning can be fun.” WCS Guidance Counselor, Mike White, said, “The conference was well planned and very interesting. The best benefit I received was making contacts with other professionals who can be resources for future projects and ideas. This alone will be invaluable.” Guidance Counselor Alisha Frazier reiterated, “It was a great opportunity for networking. All of the area schools were able to talk together and find out what common problems they were having and what they could do to solve those problems.”
Gracie Greer, WCS Upper School Assistant Principal, said, “We are working hard writing the grants due on July 16, 2007. We are hoping we can ignite excitement throughout the school with the implementation of the grants we receive.”
