Congressman Ted Poe delivers graduation address.

WCS Graduates 59 Seniors

(May 2007) Fifty Nine seniors proudly marched to the music of Pomp and Circumstance into Westbury Christian School’s newly renovated gymnasium as family and friends applauded and cheered at the commencement exercise Friday, May 25th, 2007.

The graduation ceremony started with the Pledge of Allegiance led by graduating senior Leah Holder and followed with an opening prayer by graduating senior Alan Pearson.  Mr. Robert O. McCloy then took the stage to announce the eagerly anticipated “Mr. and Miss WCS 2007” as Alan Pearson and Leah Holder! The Salutatory Address was given by Nancy Fitzpatrick.  Fitzpatrick attributed the success and togetherness of the graduating class to WCS teachers – “…teachers who surrounded us and uplifted us – teachers who really connected with us.”

During the traditional Senior Class Bible Presentation, President of the Senior Class 2006-07, Philmon Baby, presented a Bible to incoming Senior Class President 2007-08, Russell Leonard.  In his Valedictory Address, Khai Tien Le Huynh called on his fellow graduates to “believe in yourself and your dreams … because we are the future.”  Mr. McCloy then introduced the guest speaker, Congressman Ted Poe, who shared several wise anecdotes for the graduates.  Congressman Poe advised the graduates “to choose to serve your community.  Choose something that you have a passion to make a difference in.”  Poe said there will always be “critics” who try to hold you back, “but as my grandmother said, ‘If you stop and kick at every dog who barks at you, you’ll never get to town.’”  Poe went on to challenge the graduates to be like eagles “who never give in and never give up.”

Mr. Leallen Smith, President of the WCS Board of Trustees, and Mr. John Greer, Elder of the Westbury Church of Christ, gave a response.  Next, graduates were presented with their diplomas and Bibles.  Dr. David Lacey, Upper School Principal, called each graduate’s name as they walked across the stage to receive their diploma from Mr. McCloy and a Bible from Mr. John Greer.  Then, WCS junior Sarah Adams sang “Because You Loved Me” as the graduates presented their mother with a rose.  Mr. McCloy recognized special guests, and Mr. Greg Glenn, WCS Executive Administrator elect, ended the ceremony with a benediction.

Graduates and their families and friends were invited to a reception to enjoy refreshments and fellowship after the ceremony.
