WCS 5th and 6th Graders Visit Benjamin Franklin Exhibit
Sixty four Westbury Christian School intermediate students visited the Benjamin Franklin Exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS). According to Mrs. Bontrager, WCS Social Studies teacher, “the visit was an enrichment exercise in Social Studies and Science. The exhibits reinforced the material we have been learning in the classroom.”
The museum exhibits provided a huge classroom for the WCS students. The 5th and 6th grade students were awed by Benjamin Franklin’s inventions. They marveled at a copy of the Declaration of Independence, and they discovered the origin of several popular sayings such as “A penny saved is a penny earned.” The Franklin family Bible was a favorite display. According to HMNS, “The exhibition, an engaging and seamless blend of art, history, science, and material culture, features Franklin's original possessions, including many items never publicly displayed, as well as iconic works of art and rare documents. In particular, we are proud to have original drafts of five key founding documents in Americas's history: the 1754 Albany Plan, the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Amity and Commerce with France, the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolution, and the U.S. Constitution. The exhibition also features some forty hands-on, interactive devices that enable visitors to explore Franklin's eighteenth-century world using twenty-first-century technology.”
The museum tour included a movie on Ancient Greece at the IMAX theatre. The students were able to recognize several archaeological terms from their Social Studies class. Another exciting exhibit was the Butterfly Habitat. According to HMNS, “The Cockrell Butterfly Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science is a stunning, living exhibit that showcases hundreds of live butterflies in a naturalistic rainforest setting. The central conservatory is a dramatic three-story glass cone filled with tropical plants and exotic butterflies. During a typical visit, one can expect to see 50 to 60 different species of the world’s largest and most colorful butterfly species, flying through the balmy air, hovering over flowers or sipping fruit juice – and occasionally, landing on visitors!”
According to Mrs. Bontrager, “Butterflies did land on the WCS students. Everyone had a great learning experience.”
