WCS Teacher Chooses Mission Trip for Spring Break
(March 2007) While the Westbury Christian School hallways were filled with the excitement of spring break stories, one teacher had a really good story to tell. Ben Johnson, WCS 5th and 6th grade math teacher, journeyed to Cité Soleil, Haiti this spring break, March 11th -15th, to help renovate a school building in need of repairs. Johnson said, “I really wanted to go down there – I’d heard it’s a really poor place and I wanted to help.”
According to Johnson, the mission trip was sponsored by Hope for Haiti’s Children, a Christian organization that has been working with Haiti’s children since the early 1990’s. The group has built churches and school buildings to assist the people of Haiti. Johnson said he worked with a few other volunteers installing new ceiling beams in a school building that housed about 150 children from the first to fifth grades.
WCS teachers participate in several mission trips each year in various parts of the world. Johnson said he has been on a mission trip to Honduras where people live in impoverished conditions. Johnson said, “I thought Honduras was poor, but Haiti is beyond that.” Johnson said a lot of the children literally have nothing – no shoes, no shirt, and no food. He said that he believes that just spending the little time that he did in Haiti lets them know that there are people who care.
