Lady Wildcats Win 2nd Place Upset in HISD Basketball Tournament
(Dec. 2006) Westbury Christian School’s Lady Wildcats was seeded #5 going into the 23rd Annual Houston Independent School District Basketball Tournament featuring 32 teams from the city of Houston and nearby locations. According to WCS head coach Russell Carr, “one of the exciting and challenging aspects of this tournament is that several teams are state recognized.” On the third day of tournament play, the Lady Wildcats were playing their sixth game against #1 seeded Westside High School for the championship. For the Wildcats, getting this far was a victory.
In the first two days, the Lady Wildcats won their three pool games against Reagan, Smiley and Sterling High Schools. There was no fanfare for those wins – that’s the least that they could do. On day three, WCS played a very close game against Madison High School. According to Coach Carr, “Madison was a better team, but our game plan was better executed.” Their win against Madison put them up against Bellaire High School, seeded #2 in the city of Houston and #10 in the nation by Sports Illustrated.
In four-minute quarters, the game against Bellaire was a nerve-racking back and forth play with the score being tied 22-22 at the end of regulation time. The game went into a two minute overtime play. WCS sophomore Waltia Rolle scored two layups. And, a free throw gave the Lady Wildcats a five point win against Bellaire! Coach Carr said that was a huge accomplishment.
According to Coach Carr, “I don’t think anyone expected us to get as far as the finals against Westside High School. We were the underdog coming in. It was an upset for Bellaire.” With Westside winning the finals, Westbury Christian School’s Lady Wildcat Varsity Basketball Team was awarded the second place trophy. WCS senior Ijeoma Waturuocha was named to the All-Tournament Team.
