WCS Student Semifinalist in National Merit Scholarship Program
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), in conjunction with the College Board, has announced its 2007 semifinalists – and, WCS student Karen McCarty was named as a semifinalist. Each year the National Merit Scholarship Program selects top scoring juniors in the PSAT exam. According to WCS Director of Guidance Mike White, “It’s a great honor and benefit to be selected as a semifinalist. These students are awarded financial aid packages and get to choose from top colleges around the country.”
Karen McCarty came to Westbury Christian School as a freshman in 2002 and excelled academically and was a member of the National Honor Society. Karen also enjoyed her involvement in soccer and music. However, her father’s work transferred the family to Milan, Italy where Karen is completing her senior year. According to Mr. White, “Karen is a very talented individual. She is well-deserving of the recognition.”
According to the NMSC September 13, 2006 publication, “The National Merit Scholarship Corporation is a not-for-profit organization that was established in 1955 to conduct the National Merit® Scholarship Program, an annual academic competition for recognition and scholarships. The semifinalists named in each year’s Merit Scholarship® competition show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.” The 52nd National Merit Scholarship Program named 16,000 semifinalists from the pool of juniors nationwide who took the PSAT exam.
