Nine WCS Students Inducted by National Junior Honor Society

(January, 2007) Westbury Christian School (WCS) recently inducted nine new members into the Jerry Cox Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). They are middle school students John Adams of Pearland; Nicole Caputo of Missouri City; Julian Casanueva, Andrew Smith, and Jonathan Solomon of Sugarland; Michael Chung, Christina Curtis and Rasheed Sulaimon of Houston; and, Joshua Joseph of Fresno.

Mrs. Gracie Greer, WCS assistant principal, welcomed students and their families at the traditional ceremony held at the Westbury Church of Christ. During the ceremony, NJHS members gave brief speeches on the four pillars of NJHS - character, scholarship, leadership and service. Each inductee was awarded a certificate of membership and a pin which was affixed by their parents. Inductees were then invited to stand and light their candle from the white candle of knowledge. They then recited the NJHS pledge, “I pledge myself to uphold the high purposes of the National Junior Honor Society to which I have been selected; I will be loyal to my school and my God, and I will maintain and encourage high standards of scholarship, leadership, service and character.”

According to Mrs. Marie McKenzie and Ms. Rachel Bentch, WCS NJHS sponsors, the National Junior Honor Society recognizes students who have attained academic excellence and who have demonstrated the hallmarks of character, scholarship, citizenship, leadership and service and encourages its members and other students to aspire to excel in these virtues.
