WCS Participates in Reader's Digest National Word Power Challenge
(January, 2007) The 4th, 5th and 6th graders at Westbury Christian School recently participated in the Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge. Participants competed at their grade level culminating in the Grade Level Championships held at the Westbury Church of Christ auditorium.
As finalists were introduced onstage, their photos were splashed on a big screen while students applauded in excitement. Participants were given a “warm-up” question, and then proceeded to the main event. In each round, students read a statement with a highlighted word used in context, and they had a multiple choice A, B, C and D to choose the right answer. It was a tough competition, but in the end, the 4th grade champion was Austin Bishop, the 5th grade champion was Wade Southerland, and the 6th grade champion was Cody Rowe.
These students then advanced to the statewide online competition. And, the lower school cheered them on in a grand style – they formed a spirit tunnel through the WCS hallways to the entrance of the computer room!
According to Mr. Casey Farris, Lower School Principal, “This event brought students together in a fun and challenging environment where those that excelled could get the recognition they earned.”
According to Reader’s Digest, “There are four levels of competition: classroom, grade, state and national. At the classroom level, there is a minimum requirement of six students from each of the participating, eligible grades. Classroom winners from each grade compete to determine a grade level winner. To compete for advancement from grade to state level, each grade level winner must take the written Qualifying Test. Only students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades are eligible to advance to the state level contest. Up to one hundred of the highest-scoring eligible students in a state or territory advance to the state level. The first-place winner from each state contest advances to the national level.”
