WCS Awarded Best of Show and Gold Medal at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Program
Fourteen art pieces from Westbury Christian’s elementary school through high school were submitted to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Program. According to WCS art teacher Karen Keese, “The students worked extra hard to complete their pieces for submission. I’m excited for them.”
While eight students received a blue ribbon, five received a red ribbon and one received a white ribbon, two of the blue ribbon recipients were selected for special recognition. According to program officials, “Every participant in the School Art Program is a winner, receiving a certificate of merit, signed by the Show president, and a blue, red or white ribbon for achievement. Special recognition is bestowed upon selected works and the artists who created them. The “Best of Show,” “Gold Medal” and “Special Merit” winners have their work prominently displayed in the Show’s Hayloft Gallery throughout the run of the Show.”
WCS senior Katie Keese’piece was selected for “Best of Show,” and WCS senior Khai Le’s piece was awarded a “Gold Medal” in the private and parochial school submissions. According to Mrs. Keese, two ‘Best of Shows’ and two ‘Gold Medals’ are awarded at the elementary, middle and high school levels for private and public schools. Last year over 300,000 pieces were submitted by kindergarteners through 12th graders from over 145 school districts including private and parochial schools. Mrs. Keese said, “It’s a significant honor for WCS to receive both a ‘Best of Show’ and a ‘Gold Medal.’
Submissions from WCS included Isaiah Covington (1st grader, blue ribbon), Elena Moore (2nd grader, blue ribbon), Michael Chung (7th grader, red ribbon), Ian Frank (8th grader, red ribbon), SunWoo Kahng (8th grader, white ribbon), Patrick Mikkelsen (10th grader, blue ribbon), Kylee Fabian (10th grader, blue ribbon), Glory Nwaugbala (10th grader, red ribbon), Samaria Mouton (11th grader, blue ribbon – she also received “Best of Show” in last year’s entries), Roxana Ramirez (11th grader, red ribbon) , Taylor Aschermann (12th grader, red ribbon), Khai Le (12th grader, blue ribbon and “Gold Medal” recipient), Katie Keese (12th grader, blue ribbon and “Best of Show” recipient), and Kornpat Chevanintakul (12th grader, blue ribbon).
