WCS Students Excel at Science Olympiad
(March 2007) Several Westbury Christian School students brought back award medals from the recent Science Olympiad held at Blinn College in Bryan, Texas. Both high school and middle school students entered several categories including Rocks and Minerals, Robot Ramble, Designer Genes and Meteorology. According to Mrs. Gracie Greer, WCS Upper School Assistant Principal, “The Science Olympiad is designed to generate interest and knowledge in science through competition with students from other schools.”
The WCS Middle School team included Patrick Plant, Andrew Smith, Matthew Smith, Ealing Tuan, Christina Curtis, Justin Goodman, John Adams, Coleman White, Taylor Lafferty, Paul Francisco, and Joshua Joseph. The high school team included Jim Chu, Joy Chou, Chris Robinson, Garner Haynie and Patti Lee. According to Ms. Bentch, “Our students did a great job representing our school by being well behaved and succeeding in the competition.”
In the middle school competition, Andrew Smith and John Adams received 3rd place medals for Rocks and Minerals, Patrick Plant and Coleman White received 3rd place medals for History of Science and Ealing Tuan and Christina Curtis received 2nd place medals for Meteorology. In the high school competition, Jim Chu and Joy Chou received 2nd place medals for Fermi Questions, Chris Robinson received a 4th place medal for Robot Ramble and Garner Haynie and Patti Lee received 4th place medals for Designer Genes.

According to WCS high school science teacher, Mr. Nathan Lang, “By participating in Science Olympiad, students have opportunities to expand their cognitive abilities in problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity.”
