Summer Missions a Tradition
at WCS
Every summer, various Westbury Christian School faculty, staff and students participate in mission work around the globe. One faculty member, Steve Hawley, has been doing mission work in Honduras for the past nine years. According to Mr. Hawley, Shine Missions (www.shinemissions.org) has been organizing mission groups to Honduras for many years. This summer, a group of 70 people, mostly from Nashville and Houston, journeyed to rural Choluteca to do construction work for one week.
Five WCS folks were in the Houston group including Athletic Director Greg Glenn and his son Cody Glenn (WCS 8th grader), math teacher Ben Johnson, Bible teacher Steve Hawley, and kindergarten teacher April Cusic. According to Greg Glenn, the work day included building fences and pouring concrete for a church foundation. Ben Johnson talked about the bridge that he helped to build. Steve Hawley explained that rural Choluteca which is a three hour drive from the capital city of Tegucigalpa is still recovering from the devastation that Hurricane Mitch created by heavy floods in 1998.
Shine Missions with the collaboration of the local community has been helping with the rebuilding effort throughout the year with the greater participation in the summer. This summer they completed two bridges that gave access to the local school. According to Hawley, the locals do not have cars, and they walk to get to where they need to go. During heavy rains, the creeks normally flood preventing children from getting to school. With the bridges in place, children can now get to school in spite of the flooding creeks.
According to Steve Hawley, “The mission work in Honduras has become a part of my life. It’s an experience that I use in the classroom to connect my students with the underprivileged people in the world.”
