Westbury Christian School Upper School Principal Nathan Wagner announced 2017 graduates Will Symonds and Lyanne Velasquez as Mr. and Miss WCS at the start of the school’s annual commencement ceremony on Friday, May 19. Symonds and Velasquez were recognized for living out the mission of WCS through lives characterized by good manners and an unquenchable interest in learning. Wagner also commended the pair for distinguishing themselves through their remarkable attitude, spirit of service, and willingness to rise to their teacher’s high expectations while upholding the school’s standards of conduct.

The ceremony also included speeches by salutatorian Yeonji Kim and valedictorian Tong Zhang, as well as a keynote address by Joel Cowley, president and CEO of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Forty-one graduates — who received acceptances from more than 100 public and private colleges and universities across the United States and were offered approximately $6.3 million in academic and athletic scholarships — received their diplomas and a personalized Bible from the Westbury Church of Christ.
Senior Annie Brown performed “For Good,” from the musical “Wicked,” during the traditional rose ceremony, when graduates leave the stage to present a solitary rose to their mother or another influential family member or friend.
